Congratulations! Whether you are young and just starting out, or have been given the opportunity to tie the knot anew, marriage is one of the most significant life-altering milestones many of us experience. Marriage creates instant responsibilities and financial needs.

Here are some general topics you should address as a married couple or domestic partner:

• Draft or update your wills. Your will determines how your estate is distributed if you die. Make sure yours is current.
• Review your life insurance needs. And that means both of you. Ask the key question: What would happen to my partner if something happened to me? With life insurance, you can know that some financial aspects of that question have been answered. Which type of insurance is right for you? That depends. Your primary choices include term life, whole life, universal life, or variable life. • Purchase disability insurance. If you become disabled and are unable to work, disability insurance can replace your income until you are back on your feet again.

• Update your auto insurance. This is a good time to review your coverage, so you and your spouse are under one auto insurance policy. You also might be eligible for a rate drop when you change from single to married status.
