A large part of the financial reform addresses transparency and open disclosure by financial institutions in the products and services offered. This allows the consumer to make better informed decisions when it comes to their finances. As member advocates, FAIRWINDS will continue its practice of doing what is in the best interest of the member and not just the bottom line. Our operating philosophy is, and always has been, based on the practice of transparency, simplicity, trustworthiness, and benevolence. Another consumer protection included with the legislation is that it makes permanent the $250,000 insurance guarantee for account holders. This coverage is insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and applies to every member of the credit union. The credit union industry benefits as well from the new legislation. Congress recognizes the importance the cooperative structure of credit unions brings to its members and the economy and has left its regulatory structure intact and independent. This underscores the value that credit unions offer to consumers through their non-profit structure and their philosophy of people helping people. With the largest financial reform bill in recent history signed into law, many consumers are taking solace knowing measures are in place to promote stability within the financial markets. The reform aims to prevent financial institutions from the self serving practices that contributed to the financial meltdown and caused unwelcome stress to so many Americans. I’d like to take this opportunity to review how this new legislation impacts FAIRWINDS and you as a member.
Our annual teddy bear sale to help support the American Diabetes Association is in full swing and runs through November 6. Bears are on sale for $10 each or three for $25 with all proceeds going to the ADA. Stop by your favorite FAIRWINDS branch to purchase a furry friend, including our college bears.
