Fairwinds COO goes pink for breast cancer awareness

Would you dye your hair pink to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer?

Phil Tischer, chief operating officer of Orlando-based Fairwinds Credit Union, did. And, he did so on Oct. 25 — the day of the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission's annual barbecue event on Central Avenue in downtown Orlando so he could show his new 'do to 500 of Orlando's top business leaders.

"I picked that day because I wanted to make an impact," said Tischer, 52.

The 20-year Fairwind employee's dye job was paying off on a challenge to his coworkers to raise $5,000 for the Central Florida affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. By selling pink ribbons, bracelets and hosting bake sales, Fairwinds employees raised $6,100.

Tischer issued the challenge because he thought it would help motivate his coworkers to help the community.

Tischer's shocking pink hair has drawn giggles from children while he has been out in public, but he draws smiles and positive comments from many adults.

The pink hair is expected to last a few more weeks — long enough to last through a period where auditors and federal regulators are examining the credit union.

When I asked Tischer if he would be willing to do something like this again, he said, "I certainly would be willing to do anything to help a worthwhile cause."
