Preparing for Success: How Financial Literacy Fuels Career Readiness

From teaching high school students real-world financial scenarios to supporting adults with career readiness programs, FAIRWINDS Foundation is empowering individuals to achieve financial confidence.

Preparing individuals for the workforce has never been more critical. Job readiness is crucial not just for individuals, but for entire communities. For individuals, employment provides income that stabilizes households and improves family well-being; it offers health benefits and opportunities for social mobility, leading to improved quality of life. For communities, high employment rates drive economic growth, support local businesses, reduce poverty, and promote social stability. Overall, a trained workforce contributes to more prosperous economies that can positively impact future generations.

One of the most important components in helping a person prepare for the workforce is providing ongoing financial literacy education. Experts have found that individuals with a stronger grasp of financial concepts are better prepared to navigate and bounce back from crises. Financial resilience helps individuals withstand unexpected financial challenges, such as job loss or medical emergencies while maintaining their well-being.

Why Financial Literacy Matters

Financial literacy is a foundational skill for anyone preparing, entering, or re-entering the workforce. From managing a budget to understanding emergency savings and planning for retirement, being financially confident can help job seekers make informed decisions that support their career goals. Understanding how to manage your money can also reduce stress, improve confidence, and lead to more productive work habits.

“Empowering individuals and families with the knowledge and tools to improve their financial health strengthens the overall economic well-being of our community,” says Elisha González, vice president of community relations and government affairs at FAIRWINDS and executive director of the FAIRWINDS Foundation.

At FAIRWINDS, we are proud to be part of the solution to help build the talent pipeline in the communities we serve. From our crewmembers volunteering and sharing their expertise in the classroom to the FAIRWINDS Foundation investing directly in key community organizations, here is how we are making a difference together.

Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce

It’s never too early to prepare the future generation for tomorrow’s workforce. We previously teamed up with FAIRWINDS Foundation recipient 8 Cents in a Jar to empower youth in marginalized communities through financial education.

FAIRWINDS crewmembers volunteered at the Teach Students Money Expo, where high schoolers dove into a real-world simulation of adult life in "EightVille." Students were provided with a fictitious credit score, career, and family scenario—navigating financial decisions and mastering the art of balancing needs and wants to overcome hurdles. The simulation showcased various businesses running 20 storefronts where students spent their money to pay for everyday monthly bills such as rent, electricity, food, insurance, childcare, and transportation. All vital lessons to help them prepare for a future career.

Steven Nichols, FAIRWINDS Mortgage Loan Officer, had the opportunity to be an “EightVille” instructor for the day. “It was a huge honor to be there for these students and share whatever financial nuggets I could to help them,” said Steven. “It was truly an exciting and inspiring event!”

Preparing Today’s Workforce

School-aged children aren’t the only ones gearing up for the next stage of their lives. FAIRWINDS Foundation supports organizations whose focus is lifting up adults through financial literacy and career readiness.

FAIRWINDS Foundation grant recipient United Against Poverty Orlando (UP Orlando) leveraged funding to fuel its Success Training Employment Program (STEP), helping low-income individuals and families gain workforce development, long-term career counseling, and financial literacy training.

“I lost my job six months after I started due to health reasons, but thanks to UP Orlando, I found part-time work,” Mandy, a STEP participant, recalled. “I’ve loved the positive environment at STEP and the ‘no shame’ culture UP Orlando has cultivated. It has meant everything to me as I got back on my feet.”

In addition to valuable support through grant funds, FAIRWINDS crewmembers also pitch in to restock UP Orlando’s Grocery Center, part of their Member Share Grocery Program. All these efforts build up to participants feeling financially confident as they enter the workforce.

“We’re proud to make a philanthropic investment to uplift these organizations, but we’re also making an investment through our crew volunteering their thought leadership, expertise, and talent,” said Adrian Kierulf-Velez, FAIRWINDS Community Relations Manager.

Adds Adrian, “Building a stronger workforce is a collaborative effort requiring cross-sector partnerships. By volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness, we all have the power to make a difference and build thriving communities together.”
